Do Vitamins stop Panic Attacks?

Sometimes panic self help begins with being a little uncomfortable.A panic sufferer is able to aid themselves through eating and lifestyle changes.  Not all of these changes deprive the anxiety sufferer; a number of the changes are additions that can help the panic sufferer feel healthier, not as anxious, and more in charge of their lives.  Just as it has been long known that stress depletes the number of vitamins and minerals in the body, it is also recognized that supplementing the diet with extra vitamins and minerals will assist the body combat stress.  Although beyond the scope of this article, taking some herbs have also been shown to assist the body combat feelings of anxiety and stress.

Chief among the vitamin supplements that should be taken are the B Vitamins.  There are eleven B vitamins and they all work in concert to promote energy and maintain the nervous system.  There are eleven different B vitamins but eleven pills don’t have to be popped.  They are obtainable packaged together though if an individual is under tremendous stress, an additional amount of B5 can assist in managing stress.  B5 in particular helps the adrenal gland and that specific gland is particularly busy during stressful situations.

Vitamin C also helps a person deal with stress.  While long known to enhance the immune system, Vitamin C works alongside Vitamin B.  As an additional bonus, Vitamin C, as well as the B vitamins, boosts energy levels and battles exhaustion.  Vitamin C also helps support the adrenal gland right along with the B vitamins.  There are some side effects with taking large quantities though.  Unlike Vitamin B, Vitamin C is not as water soluble and has been linked with kidney stones.  For all vitamins, even “harmless” ones, an individual should be careful at taking too many and confer with their physician.

As for minerals, calcium is a natural tranquilizer and calms a person.  A person normally needs at least 1000mg of calcium a day for good health.  The nervous system needs calcium to help nerve impulses travel between cells so a shortage can lead to nervous system troubles.  The good news is that calcium is readily obtainable from nutritional sources so if a supplement is necessary, it is likely to be small.  For maximum panic self help effect, any calcium supplement should be taken along with magnesium as the two minerals help each other.  Plus, magnesium has a natural calming effect.

These four dietary substances, Vitamins B, C, magnesium, and calcium, are essential to support good nervous system health and combat panic attacks.  Therapy for panic attacks should include nutritional information on these and other dietary elements such as chromium and cobalt, the lack of which can indicate dietary problems such as hypoglycemia or a vitamin deficiency with symptoms similar to those of panic attacks.  Information about the most helpful dosages should be available from a nutritionist or medical professional.
